Six Alabama companies have been named to Forbes' 500 of America's best midsize employers.
Forbes defined midsize companies as having 1,000 to 5,000 employees. To compile the list, Forbes worked with market research company Statista to pinpoint the companies liked best by employees.
Statista surveyed 30,000 people working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees. All surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions.
According to the magazine, respondents were asked to rate, on a scale of zero to 10, how likely they would be to recommend their employer to others. Statista then asked respondents to nominate organizations in industries outside their own.
At the top spot was publishing's Penguin Random House of New York City.
Alabama companies making the list were:
Aerospace and defense company Austal USA, of Mobile, was the highest ranked at 120.
Transportation and logistics firm AAA Cooper Transportation, of Dothan, at 189.
Insurance company Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Alabama, of Birmingham, at 232.
Business services and supply company Altec of Birmingham at 345.

And Adtran of Huntsville, manufacturing semiconductors, hardware and equipment, at 471.
