A survey has found that more than 40 percent of Americans think the country will witness a civil war in the next five years. Republican voters in the US were also found to be more worried about a potential civil war taking place, with 54% of those surveyed believing that it would happen by 2029.
The online and telephone survey was carried out by Rasmussen Reports. An appalling 41% of US voters think a civil war is "likely" to break out in the next five years. Moreover, 16% of the respondents surveyed also think that a civil war is "very likely", a report said.
Rasmussen Reports said, "The possibility that America could face another civil war soon is not too far-fetched for a lot of voters."
While the number of respondents who believed the likelihood of such a scenario was shocking, 49% of the respondents said that they didn't think a civil war was likely to take place in the next five years. 20 percent also said that they didn't think a civil war was likely to happen at all, while 10 percent responded saying they weren't sure.
The surveyed also analysed presidential preferences and how it was tied to the likelihood of a civil war, if at all. 37% of the respondents said a civil war is more likely if Joe Biden is re-elected as President in the upcoming elections. In contrast, only 25% felt the same would be the case if Donald Trump was elected. Moreover, 30% believed who the President was would not make a difference.
Republican voters are also more worried, in general, about a potential civil war taking place, with 54% believing that it would happen by 2029. In February, Donald Trump supporters warned there would be a civil war in America in case he loses this year's election, the report said.
On the possibility of an open conflict, Trump reportedly said, "I don’t know".
There's "a level of passion and hatred I’ve never seen. And that’s probably a bad combination," he said in the interview with Tucker Carlson.
The belief in the possibility of political violence in the United States may have seen an increase after the January 6 Attack on the Capitol in the country.
According to the US State Attorney's Office, more than 1,265 defendants have been arrested from nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Some of the charges against these individuals include assault, destruction of government property, conspiracy, and obstruction of official proceedings.
